Why grey sellers are the hidden revenue leak for premium consumer brands

Not every marketplace threat is counterfeit. For premium retail brands, unknown and grey sellers can quietly erode pricing, partner control, customer trust and official online sales.

Why grey sellers are the hidden revenue leak for premium consumer brands

For many consumer brands, the first marketplace concern is counterfeit products. That is logical. Fake products damage trust, steal demand and create consumer risk.

But for premium retail brands, another problem often hides in plain sight: grey sellers.

These sellers may offer real products, but outside the brand’s approved commercial structure. They can appear on marketplaces, discount aggressively, use poor product content, ship from unexpected regions, create warranty confusion or compete directly with official stores and authorised retail partners.

The issue is not always simple infringement. The issue is control.

Not every marketplace problem is fake

Marketplace exposure is rarely one single problem. A brand may see authorised sellers, known retail partners, unknown sellers, grey sellers, unauthorised resellers, counterfeit sellers and scam or impersonation stores all appearing next to each other.

For consumer brands, the first question should not always be: can we remove this?

The better first question is: what exactly are we looking at?

Without seller classification, teams risk treating different problems as the same issue. That can lead to missed enforcement opportunities, friendly fire against partners or weak visibility into where product leakage is really coming from.

Why grey sellers hurt consumer brands

Grey sellers can be difficult because they may not always be selling fake products. But they can still create real commercial damage.

They can reduce price control, compete with official stores, confuse consumers, damage premium positioning, create warranty and service issues, frustrate authorised retail partners, hide supply chain leakage and take visibility from official channels.

For premium brands, this matters. The online buying moment is part of the brand experience. When a customer sees inconsistent pricing, unclear seller names, poor product content or suspicious fulfilment, trust drops.

The brand may not lose the customer in a dramatic way. It loses control slowly, listing by listing.

The risk is bigger on marketplaces

Marketplaces reward availability, pricing, reviews and speed. That means a grey seller with stock and aggressive pricing can sometimes sit next to, or above, the official seller.

For a consumer, the difference between official, unauthorised and fake is often invisible.

When the marketplace page becomes messy, the brand loses control of the buying moment.

    What consumer brands should track

A strong marketplace control program should track more than the number of listings removed.

Consumer brands should understand seller name and seller ID, marketplace and country, product type and SKU, price deviation, stock signals, shipping origin, product images, use of official content, repeat seller behaviour and whether a seller is authorised, unknown, grey, unauthorised or clearly infringing.

This creates a shared view for legal, e-commerce, retail and commercial teams.

    How Brandsolo helps

Brandsolo helps consumer brands detect marketplace and webshop exposure, classify sellers, whitelist authorised partners and act against approved infringement types through our Marketplace & Webshop Protection module.

Our team combines AI-first detection with human validation, evidence capture and rule-based enforcement, so legal, e-commerce and channel teams can work from the same view.

Brandsolo supports marketplace and webshop scanning, grey seller and unauthorised seller detection, seller classification before enforcement, authorised seller whitelisting, counterfeit and IP-based removals, repeat seller tracking, price and marketplace visibility and clear reporting for legal and e-commerce teams. For scam domains and lookalike brand stores, Domain Shield extends the same approach to the domain layer.

Take control of who sells your products online

The goal is not to blindly remove every non-official seller. The goal is to restore visibility, protect consumers and give the brand control over where and how its products appear online.
