TikTok Shop is coming to Europe. Fake sellers will follow.

TikTok Shop is launching in the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Poland on 15 June.

For many brands, that sounds like a pure growth opportunity.

More reach. More creators. More impulse buying. A shorter route from content to checkout.

But every new commerce channel also creates a new abuse channel.

TikTok Newsroom announced that TikTok Shop will be available in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland from 15 June, joining existing European TikTok Shop markets.

We have seen this pattern before: fakes on marketplaces, fake webshops, scam and impersonation domains, social ads and now social commerce.

The question for brands is no longer only: how do we sell more through TikTok Shop?

The better question is: who else will start selling with our name, our products, our content and our fans as the target?

Social commerce changes the speed of abuse

TikTok Shop is different from a traditional marketplace experience.

Users do not always start with search. They discover products through short videos, creators, livestreams, recommendations and entertainment-led content. That makes the buying journey faster and more emotional.

For official brands, that is powerful.

For counterfeiters, it is powerful too.

A fake seller does not need to win a long search journey. They can use a video, an offer, a creator-style format or a paid social route to move a user from attention to purchase in seconds.

That makes social commerce a natural next step for counterfeit products, unauthorised sellers and scam-driven funnels.

The risk is similar to marketplaces, but harder to see

TikTok Shop might feel different from regular marketplaces, but the risk is similar and real.

Most platforms are reactive by design.

Products often go live first. Rights holders then have to prove what is fake, unauthorised or misleading. In the meantime, the seller can already be taking traffic, trust and sales away from the official channel.

That is the part many brands underestimate.

The abuse is not always limited to the product listing itself. It can include social posts, creator-style content, redirect links, fake webshops, scam domains, misleading seller names, copied product visuals and offers that look official but are not.

This is why social commerce should be monitored as part of a wider protection layer, not as a separate channel.

Why this matters for rights holders

For music, sports, entertainment and consumer brands, the risk is not only lost revenue.

It is also fan protection, customer trust and channel control.

A fan who buys a fake tour shirt through a social commerce route still connects that bad experience to the artist or rights holder. A sports fan who sees an unofficial jersey offer in a shoppable video may not know whether the seller is authorised. A consumer brand can lose control of pricing, product claims and brand experience before the customer ever reaches the official shop.

That is why TikTok Shop belongs inside 360° brand protection.

    A strong setup should include:

For more on this layer, see our Social Media Protection solution.

    • official sellers mapped and whitelisted
    • unauthorised sellers detected quickly
    • fake products removed fast
    • scam links and redirect domains followed
    • product, seller and evidence data captured
    • marketplace, webshop, domain and social signals connected
    • fans and customers pushed back to the official channels

    Counterfeit merchandise will follow demand

    Counterfeiters follow attention.

When a new channel creates demand, fake sellers test it. When a product, artist, team, event or consumer brand starts trending, counterfeiters move faster.

This is already visible across marketplace and webshop environments, where fake merchandise, unauthorised offers and copycat sellers can appear at scale. Social commerce adds a new acceleration layer because products can spread through content, creators and algorithmic discovery.

For brands and rights holders, the answer is not to slow down commerce. The answer is to protect the route to purchase.

    More context on counterfeit merchandise.

AI makes this both easier and harder

AI is changing both sides of the market.

For bad actors, AI makes it easier to generate product visuals, fake storefronts, product descriptions, social posts and scam pages at speed.

For brands, AI can help detect signals earlier, classify sellers, compare product patterns, capture evidence and prioritise enforcement. But AI alone is not enough. Brand protection still needs human validation, clear rules, authorised seller data and enforcement experience.

The winning model is AI-powered detection with specialist human review and fast operational execution.

    More on AI-powered enforcement.

What brands should do before TikTok Shop scales

Brands should not wait until social commerce abuse becomes visible through customer complaints.

The better move is to prepare before scale arrives.

That means creating a clear view of authorised sellers, setting rules for what is allowed, monitoring the channel from the start, connecting TikTok Shop signals with wider marketplace and domain data, and making enforcement part of the operating model.
